Project Organisation

The work programme is organised into six work packages (WP).

WP1 Management and monitoring (Leader UH)
WP2 Communication and dissemination activities (Leader AUTH)
WP3 Analysis and examination of policy and stakeholder needs (Leader TNO)
WP4 Analysis of the current state of urban air quality and health research (Leader FMI)
WP5 Future research needs for urban air quality and health (Leader UU)
WP6 Implications for European strategies on urban sustainable development (Leader UH)

The overall work schedule is organised in to two main phases:

Phase 1 – Review and analysis

  • WP3 Analysis and examination of policy and stakeholder needs
  • WP4 Analysis of the current state of urban air quality and health research

Phase 2 Interpretation and recommendations

  • WP5 Future research needs for urban air quality and health
  • WP6 Implications for European strategies on urban sustainable development

WP’s 1 and 2 are overarching activities for the project.

Phase 1 work packages will focus on collating, reviewing and analysing the key needs and requirements as set out in the EU Commission’s action plans and strategies, namely, Environment and Health Action Plan (E&HAP), Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP), Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment (TSUE) and CAFE (Clean Air for Europe) in the broader context of sustainable development of urban regions. This work will continue with examining the current state of art of urban air quality and health research (WP4) and will derive the knowledge available to address the needs highlighted by WP3.

Phase 2 will involve work packages which will focus on interpretation and recommendations, derived from Phase 1, for future research needs and implications for European strategies. The policy needs which cannot be adequately met by the current state of scientific understanding and knowledge will be considered in WP5 which will examine the collated information from WP3 and 4 to identify prioritised research gaps to be addressed in the future.  The implications for European strategies and action plans, in terms of their broader aims, will be examined in WP6, which will also consider the future direction of CAFE and possible research topics for FP7 to provide the future scientific support for these major policy initiatives.
